Spain: Chinese factory near naval base sparks defense concerns

Spain's Ministry of Defense has issued a stark warning regarding the construction of a Chinese automotive factory located just 5 kilometers from a crucial Spanish naval base. The report, also involving the National Intelligence Center (CNI), highlights significant espionage risks associated with the Chinese presence in the Galician region.

The naval base in Ferrol is a vital hub for the Spanish Navy, housing vessels with highly sensitive military technology. The proximity of SAIC Motor's planned assembly plant has raised alarms, with concerns that it could compromise the security of the base and Spain's strategic interests.

According to the report, Spain faces the potential consequence of NATO and the European Union viewing the Ferrol port as less secure. This could negatively impact foreign investment and partnerships, potentially deterring countries like Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands from engaging with the port.

In contrast to the defense ministry's concerns, regional authorities in Galicia are championing the project. They view the SAIC Motor factory as a "strategic industrial project" with the potential to create around 1,000 direct jobs and bring an investment of approximately 200 million euros to the region. The Galician government has expedited administrative procedures to facilitate the factory's construction, aiming for it to be operational by the end of 2028.
