Spain demands Italy revoke border controls by Sunday or face measures

The Spanish government has demanded that Italy revoke its border controls, which were reinstated on August 1 following the migratory crisis in Ceuta. Spain warned that it would adopt proportional retaliatory measures if Italy fails to comply by Sunday, August 9.

Meanwhile, the body of a young migrant of sub-Saharan origin was recovered after he died attempting to reach Ceuta from Morocco by paraglider. He fell into the sea shortly before landing. Four ministers from the Spanish government are scheduled to brief the Congress in an extraordinary session regarding the management of the migratory crisis in Ceuta. This follows the entry of over 72,000 migrants from Morocco on July 30. The request for hearings, also made by the opposition Popular Party, was confirmed by the government.
