Spain: Fires Near Madrid Force Evacuations, Confinement

Wildfires near Toledo have prompted the evacuation of several towns and the confinement of Villa del Prado, a municipality southwest of Madrid. Emergency services issued alerts via mobile phones, instructing residents in Villa del Prado to remain indoors with doors and windows shut until further notice as the Almorox fire spread rapidly.

The fire, which ignited in Almorox in the Castilla-La Mancha region, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Madrid, led to the closure of several roads. Civil Guard advised extreme caution for drivers due to low visibility caused by smoke. Firefighters also warned that smoke columns might drift into the commune overnight, advising those with respiratory issues to close windows.

This incident is part of a broader trend of intense wildfires across Spain, fueled by a two-day heatwave. The fire near Toledo is not the largest; a significant blaze in Guadalajara province, north of Madrid, has already consumed 32,000 hectares since last Thursday. These fires are spreading quickly, particularly in arid areas with abundant dry brush.

Overall, Spain has experienced a devastating wildfire season, with nearly 125,000 hectares burned nationwide since January 1, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis). This figure approaches the record year of 2025, when over 393,000 hectares were destroyed, marking the worst recent year for wildfires in the country.
