Spain mobilizes thousands for total solar eclipse amid wildfire concerns

Spain is enacting an unprecedented security and logistical operation, mobilizing tens of thousands of military personnel, police officers, and emergency responders in anticipation of a total solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12. Authorities are bracing for a record number of spectators eager to witness the celestial event, which will be visible across the country.

The Ministry of Defense has approved a request from the Balearic Islands government to deploy a tactical unit to support police in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range on Mallorca. Given the eclipse's visibility across the entire Balearic archipelago, the military contingent will be appropriately expanded. Maritime companies in the Balearics report that nearly all available vessels have already been chartered for eclipse-viewing excursions. In Palma, the medical emergency service is organizing a special bus route to S'Arenal, a coastal town south of the capital, which will see its beach closed from noon until the border with Llucmajor.

Nationwide, the government has launched a comprehensive security initiative involving 33,600 National Police and Civil Guard agents operating under a unified command. This operation will ensure surveillance across land, sea, and air. An additional 2,500 personnel from the Directorate General of Road Traffic will be assigned to coordinate the operation continuously. An estimated one million people are expected to travel, leading the central government to restrict access to 123 high-risk zones, citing environmental concerns or evacuation difficulties.

The eclipse, beginning around 7:37 PM local time in Mallorca, will feature a partial phase followed by a total phase lasting approximately three minutes around 8:30 PM. The phenomenon will occur shortly before sunset, with the sun low on the horizon, creating ideal conditions for spectacular viewing and photography. The total solar eclipse will also be observable in regions like Valencia, Castile and León, Galicia, and the Basque Country.

Adding to the concerns, authorities are also mobilizing the military due to a heightened risk of wildfires in the Balearic Islands and along the eastern coast this week. Military personnel will join the existing forest firefighter teams deployed across the islands. The regional government plans to increase the number of aerial resources to combat potential fires.
