Spain's Ceuta Faces Chaos as Thousands of Illegal Immigrants Breach Border, Loot Shops

Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta is in chaos after an estimated 60,000 illegal immigrants, mostly from Morocco, surged across the border in just 24 hours. The influx, which temporarily increased the city's population by 60%, has led to widespread looting of local businesses.

Video footage circulating on social media shows large groups of migrants breaking into stores and carrying off goods. Authorities are struggling to manage the situation, with reports of at least 57 deaths during the crossing, some from drowning and others from being trampled on the beach.

Adding to the crisis, approximately 7,000 unaccompanied minors have entered Ceuta. Under Spanish law, these minors cannot be forcibly deported without their parents present. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has appealed to regional governments for assistance in housing these children and adolescents.

In response to the escalating situation, Spain has deployed military forces to reinforce security in Ceuta. Many shops have closed their doors, and residents express fear of being robbed, leaving the streets deserted except for the migrants. Some migrants who arrived have reportedly decided to return to Morocco, finding the reality of Ceuta different from their expectations and lacking basic necessities like food.
