Spain’s Roberto Moreno named South Korea’s interim national team coach for six matches

Roberto Moreno will take charge of South Korea for six international matches after the Korea Football Association appointed the Spaniard as the national team’s interim coach.

Moreno’s contract runs through Nov. 27, covering matches scheduled from September to November. It also includes a possible extension through the 2027 Asian Cup, depending on the team’s results in those six games.

The 49-year-old began coaching in his 20s and served as an assistant coach at Barcelona from 2014 to 2017. He later managed Monaco, Granada and Sochi. Moreno also worked within Luis Enrique’s coaching group. When Enrique temporarily left his post as Spain coach in March 2019, Moreno took charge for three matches before receiving the permanent appointment that June.

He will be joined by an entirely Spanish coaching staff. Eduardo Docampo, who worked with Moreno at Sochi, will serve as senior assistant. The group also includes coach Jacint Magriñà, a specialist in analysis and training methodology, lower-league coach Víctor Bravo Desoto, physical coach Javier Chocarro, who has worked in major European leagues, and goalkeeper coach Nico Bosch, a 10-year La Liga veteran.

The association used an open recruitment process for the first time, following rules revised by the Korea Sports Council in February. The reported final candidates also included Domènec Torrent, Jesús Casas and Erwin Koeman. Moreno stood out for his understanding of Korean football and his willingness to offer several tactical options.
