Spain seeks EU aid for 5,000 migrants in Ceuta amid local tensions

Spain has formally requested assistance from the European Border and Coastguard Agency (Frontex) to manage the processing of around 5,000 migrants currently in the North African enclave of Ceuta. The request, sent by Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, also includes a plea for an additional 10 Frontex officers to expedite screening efforts.

The situation in Ceuta has become increasingly tense, with local residents expressing anger over the large number of migrants who crossed the border from Morocco on July 30. Authorities estimate that between 5,000 and 8,000 people, including unaccompanied children, remain in the enclave. The influx reportedly resulted in significant casualties, with official figures stating 82 deaths on the Spanish side and 14 on the Moroccan side, though human rights groups suggest higher numbers.

Rising tensions have manifested in protests by Ceuta residents demanding the migrants' departure. Tents on Trampolin Beach, a makeshift camp for many migrants, have been targeted, with some set ablaze. In a recent incident, 12 migrants were arrested for allegedly stoning an army vehicle, injuring a soldier and four migrants. Eleven of those arrested were reportedly expelled from Ceuta.

This request for EU assistance follows a previous formal appeal made by Madrid for emergency funding to address the ongoing crisis. The Spanish authorities are working to identify individuals to determine their eligibility for international protection and to initiate return procedures for those who do not qualify.
