Spain seeks EU aid for processing migrants in Ceuta

Spain has formally requested assistance from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) to help manage the influx of migrants in the North African enclave of Ceuta. The appeal was made by Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to Beate Gminder, Director-General for Migration and Home Affairs at the European Commission.

The request for Frontex's support comes almost a month after a massive surge of people, estimated in the tens of thousands, crossed into Ceuta from Morocco on July 30. Authorities report that between 5,000 and 8,000 individuals remain in Ceuta following this unprecedented event. The initial crossing resulted in significant casualties, with 82 migrants confirmed dead on the Spanish side and Morocco reporting an additional 14 fatalities.

In addition to processing the undocumented migrants, Spain has also asked for 10 more Frontex officers to aid in the verification process. This request highlights the strain on Spanish resources and the need for international cooperation in managing such large-scale migration events.

The situation in Ceuta has been marked by rising tensions. Local residents have staged protests, demanding the departure of the migrants. Reports indicate that tents used by migrants on Trampolin beach, a makeshift campsite, have been attacked and set on fire. Further escalating the situation, twelve migrants were arrested on Thursday after allegedly throwing stones at a military vehicle, injuring a soldier and four migrants. Eleven of these individuals were subsequently expelled from Ceuta, according to El Pais.
