Spanish truck driver gets 14 years for smuggling drugs hidden in infant formula

A Spanish truck driver, Daniel Canuira Santos, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by the Court of Sønderborg for smuggling a significant quantity of narcotics into Denmark. The court found the 37-year-old guilty of importing 120 kilograms of amphetamines and 86.5 kilograms of hashish.

The drugs were discovered on October 17 of the previous year when Danish police stopped a Dutch-registered truck at the Frøslev border crossing. Authorities found the contraband concealed within pallets of infant formula, a surprising method of concealment for such a large volume of illegal substances.

Despite the evidence presented, Santos has maintained his innocence, denying any knowledge of the drugs found in his vehicle. He has since appealed the verdict to the Vestre Landsret (Western High Court), seeking acquittal.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by Danish authorities to combat drug trafficking at the country's borders. The discovery underscores the lengths to which smugglers will go to conceal their illicit cargo, even using products intended for vulnerable populations as a cover.
