Special Inspector General Nominee Choi Gil-su Reports 1.84 Billion Won in Assets

Special inspector general nominee Choi Gil-su has reported 1.8365 billion won in assets held by himself and his family, according to documents submitted to the National Assembly.

Choi reported 608.45 million won in his own assets. They include a 246 million won apartment in Wadong-dong, Paju, Gyeonggi Province; a 640 million won leasehold in an apartment in Imun-dong, Seoul; 74.46 million won in deposits; and 31.98 million won in stocks.

His wife reported assets worth 486.28 million won, including a 197.91 million won officetel in Godeok-dong, Pyeongtaek, 334.79 million won in stocks and a 11.33 million won condominium membership. Choi’s father reported 481.62 million won, including a 221 million won apartment in Deogyang District, Goyang. His mother reported 138.02 million won, including a 93 million won multi-unit home in the same district. Choi’s two daughters, born in 2002 and 2004, reported 70.02 million won and 52.09 million won respectively in deposits and securities.

He is the right person to carry out the task of realizing the principle of popular sovereignty by establishing discipline among public officials and enhancing transparency in state affairs.

President Lee Jae-myung described Choi as suited to strengthen discipline among public officials and improve transparency in state affairs, citing his expertise in inspection work, sound and fair judgment, and organizational management skills. Lee also said Choi could help establish the special inspector general’s organization early and reorganize its operating system.

The parliamentary hearing will take place on the 18th. Choi was recommended by the Democratic Party and nominated by Lee on the 24th of last month. The special inspector general examines misconduct involving the president’s spouse, relatives within the fourth degree and senior presidential office officials at or above the level of senior secretary. If Choi clears the hearing and is appointed, the post will be filled for the first time in 10 years since former special inspector general Lee Seok-su resigned in September 2016.
