Special Prosecutors Raid Supreme Prosecutors' Office Over Treason Allegations

A special prosecutor's team is carrying out searches and seizures at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and other related agencies as part of an investigation into alleged treason by former Prosecutor General Sim Woo-jung and former Deputy Prosecutor General Jeon Moo-gon. The investigation centers on their suspected involvement in drafting a document concerning jurisdiction under a state of emergency declared on December 3.

The special prosecutor's team confirmed the existence of a document titled 'Jurisdiction Under State of Emergency' created at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office shortly after the emergency decree was announced. Investigators suspect Sim and Jeon played a role in its creation. Such a decree would expand the jurisdiction of military courts, transferring cases from civilian courts.

This is not the first time Sim and Jeon have faced legal scrutiny. Last month, arrest warrants sought for both individuals were dismissed by a court. The court cited insufficient evidence regarding the risk of them destroying evidence or fleeing, leading to the dismissal of the warrants.

The searches are reportedly targeting computer data from some researchers at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and electronic information generated or altered within the Information and Communication Division at the time of the emergency decree. The investigation aims to gather further evidence to support the allegations of treason and involvement in the drafting of the controversial document.
