Spectator Stand Collapses at Indonesian Drift Championship, Injuring 90

A temporary VIP spectator stand at the third round of the National Drift Championship (Kejurnas Drift) in Purwokerto, Indonesia, collapsed on Sunday afternoon, injuring 90 people. The incident occurred at the GOR Satria sports complex in Banyumas Regency.

Victims were promptly attended to, with over 20 ambulances deployed and 11 hospitals involved in their treatment. A press release from the event organizers stated that all 90 injured individuals received necessary medical care based on their conditions. Local government officials, event organizers, and the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) are coordinating to monitor the victims' recovery.

Local authorities, including the Banyumas Police, have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. Initial findings suggest that celebratory actions by drifters, specifically throwing t-shirts into the VIP stands, may have triggered a crowd surge. This sudden movement and crowding reportedly led to an uneven distribution of weight on the non-permanent structure, contributing to its failure.

Police Chief Kombes Petrus Silalahi stated that a crime scene investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. The government and organizers have expressed deep regret over the incident and are seeking support for the victims' recovery. The focus remains on ensuring the injured receive proper care and understanding the factors that led to the stand's collapse.
