Speed cameras in Saskatchewan to return to ticketing soon, SGI says

Speed cameras across Saskatchewan are set to return to issuing tickets in August, according to the province's public auto insurance provider, SGI. The photo speed enforcement cameras were taken offline at the end of May due to the premature termination of the contract with SGI's previous vendor.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has since secured a new vendor, Global Traffic Group Ltd., and the new contract will begin in August. While the actual camera equipment will undergo a visible change, with existing camera boxes being retired and replaced by pole-mounted cameras, the enforcement locations and fine structures will remain unchanged. SGI stated that they do not plan to add new camera locations at this time.

The most visible change will be the equipment. Existing camera boxes will be retired and replaced with pole-mounted cameras.

The purpose of photo speed enforcement, as outlined by SGI, is to encourage drivers to reduce their speed in high-risk areas, thereby helping to prevent collisions, injuries, and fatalities. Cameras operating in work zones, such as those near Regina's Wascana Parkway and Saskatoon's Circle Drive South Bridge, have remained operational since the original contract ended.

During the period the cameras were offline, SGI confirmed that police services continued to monitor Saskatchewan's roads for speeding violations. The transition to the new vendor and the return of ticketing are expected to reinforce traffic safety measures across the province.
