Speedboat capsize off Vietnam's Phu Quoc island kills 15 tourists

Fifteen Indian tourists have died after their speedboat capsized in rough seas off the coast of Vietnam's Phu Quoc island. The vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned approximately 400 meters from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, a small island near Phu Quoc.

Authorities reported that 21 people were rescued and all deceased individuals were recovered. The survivors were taken to a local hospital for treatment, with two reported to be in critical condition. Eyewitnesses described nearby boats rushing to the scene to assist before official rescue agencies, including the navy and coast guard, arrived. The rescue efforts were reportedly hampered by passengers trapped inside the submerged boat.

Footage from Vietnamese television depicted strong winds and turbulent waters as rescue teams deployed life buoys to assist those in the sea. Jet skis were used to ferry survivors to shore, where beachgoers provided first aid. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has ordered an investigation into the incident and directed officials to hold those responsible accountable. He also called for a review of maritime safety regulations in the region.

Phu Quoc is a popular tourist destination in Vietnam, known for its beaches and clear waters. The Indian Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stated that embassy personnel were providing assistance to those affected. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
