Sponsor "reveals" Ochoa to start for Mexico in World Cup match

A sponsor's social media post has seemingly revealed that Mexican national team goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa will start in Wednesday's World Cup 2026 match against the Czech Republic. Michelob ULTRA, a sponsor of the tournament, posted on X (formerly Twitter) "Today, a legend returns to the field. Cheers to @yosoy8a and twenty years in the FIFA World Cup."

This announcement contradicts the secrecy maintained by coach Javier Aguirre regarding the starting lineup. Aguirre has been non-committal about whether Raúl "Tala" Rangel, who has kept clean sheets in Mexico's previous two matches, or the veteran Ochoa, who has participated in six World Cups, would start. Rangel, a goalkeeper for Chivas, has performed well, contributing to Mexico's victories against South Africa and South Korea.

Ochoa's potential start is seen by many as a symbolic gesture to honor his extensive career. While reports suggested he might start or at least play a part in the game, the tactical considerations against the Czech Republic's aerial game were being carefully evaluated by the coaching staff.
