Sri Lanka arrests nine Chinese over attempt to smuggle in alleged cyberscam equipment

Sri Lankan customs authorities have apprehended nine Chinese nationals at the Bandaranaike International Airport, thwarting an attempt to smuggle communication equipment believed to be intended for sophisticated cyberscam operations. The discovery, which included a significant cache of used mobile phones, tablets, and Wi-Fi routers taped to the suspects' bodies, underscores the growing challenge posed by transnational criminal syndicates operating within the island nation.

The seizure, valued at approximately US$78,000, comes on the heels of a larger crackdown two weeks prior, which led to the detention of 152 foreign nationals, predominantly Chinese, for allegedly operating a large-scale cyberscam ring from a hotel in the country's northwest. These incidents highlight a concerning trend of Sri Lanka being utilized as a base for illicit online activities, exploiting its telecommunications infrastructure and geographical location.

The Chinese embassy in Colombo has acknowledged the issue, stating its commitment to collaborating with Sri Lankan authorities to curb such activities by its nationals. The embassy has noted that due to factors like Sri Lanka's well-developed telecommunications, favorable location, and relatively lenient visa policies, some fraud gangs have relocated operations there. This influx of criminal elements, targeting individuals both locally and internationally, presents a complex security challenge that requires sustained bilateral cooperation and robust enforcement measures.
