Sri Lanka Bar Association to discuss judicial retirement age amendment with President

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is set to hold a special discussion with the President regarding a proposed constitutional amendment. The amendment seeks to extend the retirement age for judges serving on the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

BASL President Upul Jayasuriya confirmed that the President has granted a meeting for Wednesday, August 12, at 1:00 PM. This follows an earlier request made by the BASL three months ago for a discussion on the proposed changes. The association had previously communicated its stance on the amendment to the President in a letter dated May 25.

The proposed amendment has been a subject of discussion within the legal fraternity, with the BASL taking a proactive role in engaging with the executive branch to clarify its position and potentially influence the final legislation. The upcoming meeting signifies a crucial step in the dialogue between the judiciary's representatives and the government on matters of judicial appointments and tenure.
