The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), an annual event often likened to the "Russian Davos," has commenced, drawing an estimated 20,000 guests from over 130 countries. This year's gathering takes place against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine and Russia's significant estrangement from Western nations.

Hours before delegates arrived, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck energy facilities in and around St. Petersburg. Russian and Ukrainian authorities confirmed the attacks, which occurred approximately 16 kilometers from the forum venue. Operations at the city's airport experienced temporary disruptions, though the conference itself is proceeding as scheduled.

As Western governments and multinational corporations have distanced themselves from Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, SPIEF has increasingly become a crucial platform for the Kremlin. It serves as a showcase for Moscow's efforts to strengthen relationships with countries in the Global South. Despite Russia's diplomatic isolation in Europe and North America, attendance has remained robust, with officials presenting the forum as evidence of Moscow's continued international partnerships beyond the West.

First held in 1997, SPIEF was initially conceived to attract foreign investment and signal Russia's openness to the global economy post-Soviet Union. Over the decades, it has evolved into a prominent international event that combines investment discussions with political debates. This year's agenda includes topics ranging from energy markets and artificial intelligence to information warfare, reflecting a broader scope beyond purely economic matters. Notably, an official U.S. delegation is attending, marking the first such participation at a major Russian economic forum since before the Ukraine war.
