Stefan Mross says goodbye as TV history ends with final “Immer wieder sonntags”

Stefan Mross struggled to hold back tears as “Immer wieder sonntags” ended its 31-year run at Europa-Park in Rust. Surrounded by friends and longtime colleagues, the presenter delivered a final goodbye from the stage.

“I was pretty strong, but in the end I couldn't do it anymore,” Mross said at the close of the program. He had planned to say more during the final 30 seconds, but told viewers that nothing came to him. “That was ‘Immer wieder sonntags,’ 31 years. All the best.”

Mross had earlier welcomed major names from the schlager scene while wearing a tie and lederhosen. Andy Borg, the show's most frequent musical guest, appeared, along with pop singer Vanessa Mai, who made her first television appearance on the program in 2013. Semino Rossi and American schlager singer Peggy March were also guests.

Marianne and Michael Hartl, known as the “dream couple of folk music,” made a one-time return after withdrawing from show business in 2024. The program also included a brief live link with Andrea Kiewel before the ZDF “Fernsehgarten.” Mross told her he was handing over the baton because she was the only person still allowed to entertain on Sunday mornings.

The program first aired on June 11, 1995. Mross took over as host in 2005, and the show adopted its current identity under his leadership. Although the broadcaster has ended the program on the Erste channel, Mross has said he wants to continue it and that discussions with other channels have already taken place. He repeatedly described the broadcast as the final episode “this year,” while saying he still did not understand the decision to cancel it.
