Stepmother admits killing two-year-old girl in Saptari: Police

A woman in Saptari, Nepal, has confessed to killing her two-year-old stepdaughter, police reported Monday. The child had been missing since Sunday morning and was later found dead in bushes behind her home.

Police detained the stepmother, Muskan Khatun, for questioning after the girl disappeared. Saptari District Police Office chief Rupak Khadka stated that Muskan admitted to the killing and disposing of the body. "Muskan has admitted to killing the child," Khadka told the Post. "She had not been speaking to Rubina for some time because of a dispute. She told us that she killed the girl and threw her body into the bushes behind the house."

Rubina Khatun is the girl's biological mother. The two women had reportedly stopped speaking due to a dispute. The toddler had been playing outside the family home until around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday before she went missing. Family members searched for her before alerting the Area Police Office in Rupani.

The girl's body has been sent for a postmortem examination. Police are investigating further and plan to seek an extension of Muskan's detention. The child's father is currently working abroad.
