Stonehenge 'Prototype' Structure Discovered by Archaeologists

An archaeological discovery near the iconic Stonehenge monument in southern England has potentially unearthed a "prototype" of the prehistoric stone circle, researchers announced Thursday. The newly found structure, believed to be around 500 years older than Stonehenge itself, offers new insights into the early development of monumental sites in Neolithic Britain.

The structure, identified by a team from Wessex Archaeology, comprised two large wooden poles positioned 120 meters apart. These poles were meticulously aligned to mark the rising sun during the summer solstice and the setting sun during the winter solstice. This celestial alignment suggests that astronomical observation and ritualistic practices were central to the site's purpose, mirroring the solar connections later seen at Stonehenge.

Archaeologist Phil Harding, a familiar face in UK archaeology through his television work, described the discovery as a career-defining moment. The site also yielded a significant collection of artifacts, including pottery, animal bones, and a rare disc-shaped knife, indicating it was likely a hub for important religious gatherings. The findings were unveiled shortly before the upcoming summer solstice, an annual event that draws thousands to Stonehenge.

The excavation took place at Bulford, approximately 5 kilometers from the main Stonehenge site, as part of archaeological work supporting the British defense ministry's troop accommodation program. While Stonehenge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was constructed in stages starting 5,000 years ago, this earlier structure provides a glimpse into the evolving traditions and beliefs of the people who inhabited the region millennia ago. The exact purpose of Stonehenge remains debated, with theories ranging from a solar temple to a coronation site or a healing center, but its connection to the solstices is widely accepted.
