Storm batters Monterrey with hail and high winds; one woman killed by collapsing billboard

A severe storm packing strong winds and hail swept through Monterrey and its surrounding metropolitan areas, causing widespread damage and tragically claiming one life. The fatal incident occurred when a large advertising billboard collapsed in San Nicolás due to powerful gusts, falling onto a 35-year-old woman and killing her instantly.

The storm arrived suddenly, with the sky darkening rapidly after a day of temperatures reaching up to 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit). Within minutes, heavy rains began, accompanied by hail in some areas and winds estimated at around 70 kilometers per hour (43 mph). This dramatic weather shift surprised residents who had been enduring several days of intense heat.

Authorities reported moderate to heavy rainfall in key Monterrey avenues, leading to significant water accumulation and temporary road closures. Hail was also reported in the municipalities of Apodaca and Escobedo. Public transport users sought shelter under bridges and overpasses to escape the downpour. The storm's conditions also affected the Fan Fest event at Parque Fundidora, where security temporarily restricted attendee movement.
