Storms Expected in Nouvelle-Aquitaine After Intense Heatwave, Fire Risk Remains High

Southern France is bracing for a shift in weather patterns as storms are forecast to hit the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region overnight Friday into Saturday. This comes after a significant heatwave has gripped much of the country, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in parts of the southwest.

The meteorological service La Chaîne Météo warns of significant stormy activity, particularly affecting Gironde, Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and Hautes-Pyrénées. These storms could bring heavy rainfall and powerful wind gusts reaching up to 100-110 km/h, posing a risk to the region already vulnerable from recent heat and dry conditions.

The intense heat has maintained a high to maximal fire risk across Nouvelle-Aquitaine and extending to the Mediterranean coast. This elevated fire danger, exacerbated by strong winds like the mistral, underscores the precarious conditions faced by the region.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates a continuation of challenging weather, with another heatwave expected to arrive by Tuesday next week, bringing generalized very high temperatures. This pattern suggests a volatile period for France, with alternating extremes of heat and severe storms.
