Strait of Hormuz Tense: Trump Accuses Iran of Ceasefire Violation After Drone Strikes on Ships

Tensions flared in the Strait of Hormuz as former US President Donald Trump denounced Iran's actions, calling drone attacks on merchant ships a "senseless violation" of a ceasefire agreement. The incident occurred on Thursday, June 26, when at least four attack drones launched by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

One drone struck the upper deck and bridge of a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, inflicting structural damage. The vessel was able to continue its journey, and no casualties were reported. The US reportedly shot down three other drones.

Trump reacted strongly on his Truth Social platform, stating, "The Islamic Republic of Iran fired at least four one-way attack drones at ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz." He emphasized the violation of the 60-day memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran, which had established a temporary ceasefire.

In response, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, asserted the nation's authority over the strait. He stated that safe passage cannot be guaranteed for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz without prior consultation with Tehran, highlighting Iran's position as a coastal state.
