‘Strange Girl’ Label Follows Zhou Chu Actress Over Her Eccentric Style

Tseng Pei-yu’s private wardrobe has earned her the nickname “strange girl.” Fan Rui-jun said Tseng enjoys pairing leopard print with other patterns, then adding a floral hat and floral suitcase. Wang Wei-chung joked that the look resembled a chameleon disappearing into flowers and trees.

The actresses discussed the stage play “Urban Renewal Men and Women” while appearing on Wang’s radio program. Tseng said touring with a theater group felt entirely different from working on film and television productions. Fan, meanwhile, revealed her own unusual habits. As an only child, she once entertained herself by taking a bus to a hospital nursery to look at babies after her mother urged her to go outside.

Fan also said she enjoys watching her two daughters argue because the noise gives the home a sense of family. She added that people have different goals in life and that marriage and children are not necessary for everyone.

The play marks Tseng’s first stage production. She plays a manager promoting urban renewal who eventually becomes friends with residents who initially oppose her. Her first performance position was in the audience, where she watched older spectators laugh at the show’s stand-up comedy. She said theater allowed her to feel the audience’s breathing, laughter and applause immediately.

Tseng, who is approaching 50, said her greatest gain in life has been learning that people can always have a first time, regardless of age. She also performs and sings in the production, including a high-pitched theme song that initially made her nervous. A joke about a wife criticizing her husband’s bedroom performance, “It is not that the house is too big, it is that the furniture is too small,” brought loud laughter from the audience. The play’s final three performances this year will take place at Taichung Zhongshan Hall on Sept. 5 and 6.
