Stray Lanyu dogs attacking sea turtles: report

Wild dogs on Taiwan's Orchid Island (Lanyu) are posing a significant threat to nesting sea turtles, with reports indicating they are digging up eggs and directly attacking adult turtles. The Iratay Community Development Association, involved in the Ocean Conservation Administration’s sea turtle protection program, has observed regular harassment by these dogs.

Association members have found dog tracks leading to unearthed nests, and this year the problem has escalated to direct attacks on adult turtles. In one documented case on June 3, dogs were heard barking near Yadai Bay, forcing a sea turtle attempting to lay eggs to retreat. Later that night, patrols found three dogs attacking a sea turtle, which, despite mild injuries, was released back to the sea. The association noted that such incidents have become frequent.

The Ocean Conservation Administration (OCA), referencing data from the association, suggested that stray dogs might be detecting the scent of hatchlings, though no significant damage to eggs has been confirmed yet. While other areas like Siaoliouciou and parts of Penghu have not reported similar issues, Lanyu faces a persistent problem.

The Lanyu Township Office has acknowledged the issue, noting that both pet and stray dogs are involved. They have purchased approximately 300 collars and leashes for free distribution to residents, but uptake has been low, with only about 20 families accepting them. The office is attempting to encourage leash and collar use but cites a shortage of veterinarians, professional personnel, and funding as major obstacles to fully addressing the stray dog problem.
