Struggling to find street bands for dreg orchestra championship in Halle

The annual Dweilfestival in Halle is encountering difficulties in securing a sufficient number of street bands for its dreg orchestra championship, raising concerns about the event's future. This year's competition features only 6 participating orchestras, with just 4 competing for the title. While the lineup includes local talent and international acts from the Netherlands and France, organizers acknowledge the reduced number.

Schepen van Cultuur Jeroen Hofmans (N-VA) expressed the desire to preserve the festival, now in its 15th year. However, attracting bands has become increasingly challenging. A significant factor is the scheduling conflict with a similar festival in the Netherlands, which tends to keep Dutch bands performing closer to home. This competition for participants highlights the need for proactive recruitment strategies.

Dweilorkesten, characterized by their brass instruments and percussion, play popular ambiance music while parading through streets and squares. Their performances are judged not only on musicality but also on audience interaction, outfits, and showmanship. Despite the challenges, bands like Moktar Soundsystem and TMDV from Paris, DAD Barst Los from the Netherlands, and the G-bloezers from Gooik are confirmed to perform. Local groups De DeciBells and d'Hopmaten will also participate, though not in the competition, focusing instead on adding to the atmosphere.

Looking ahead, the Halle Dweilfestival aims to rebound next year by increasing promotional efforts and targeting a lineup of approximately 10 bands. Organizers are committed to ensuring the festival's continuation and are actively seeking ways to overcome the current recruitment hurdles to maintain this unique cultural event.
