Student, 21, dies after collapsing during Utrecht Marathon; association mourns

A 21-year-old student who became unwell during the Utrecht Marathon on Sunday has died. The university student passed away in the hospital on Tuesday, as reported by NOS. The cause of his death remains unknown, though sources indicate he was fit and well-trained.

Hospital staff and emergency services attempted to resuscitate the student along the marathon route in Houten, a town within the Utrecht province. A trauma helicopter was also deployed, and the student was subsequently placed in an artificial coma. His student association, Veritas in Utrecht, has declared five days of mourning.

This tragedy follows another recent incident where a 15-year-old female runner died after falling ill during a competition in Leiden earlier this month. The warm weather conditions prevalent during recent May weekends have raised concerns. Multiple participants in marathons in Groningen, Utrecht, and Amersfoort reported feeling unwell.

Authorities in Groningen faced a potential shortage of ambulances, requiring assistance from neighboring provinces. In Amersfoort, a runner was resuscitated and hospitalized, and only a half marathon could be completed. A planned running event in Drenthe was canceled due to the predicted heat, with organizers deeming it irresponsible to have participants run 42 kilometers in high temperatures when medical services might be overwhelmed.

The Utrecht marathon, which saw thousands of participants, began at 10:30 a.m. when temperatures were around 19 degrees Celsius. By midday, the temperature had risen to approximately 22 degrees Celsius. Spectators along the route reportedly used garden hoses to spray participants with water, and extra water stations were provided.
