Student Killed in Sweden School Sword Attack Identified as 17-Year-Old Girl

A fatal sword attack at a school in Fagersta, Sweden, has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl. The incident occurred Friday at the Brinell School, where an 18-year-old male student, armed with a sword, attacked students during class hours. One person died, and three others sustained injuries, two of them severe.

The suspect, identified as a student at the school, was apprehended by police. Authorities stated they have no indication of additional perpetrators. The two severely injured victims are boys aged 12 and 17. A third individual, also under 18, suffered minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

In the aftermath, approximately 70 people gathered at a memorial site to lay flowers and light candles. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visited the site, expressing solidarity with the affected families and referencing past school attacks in Sweden. "What must never happen has happened again," Kristersson stated. The attack has prompted political parties to halt campaign events as Sweden prepares for its parliamentary election in September.

Investigators are examining the motive behind the attack and have conducted house searches. This incident adds to a history of violent school attacks in Sweden, including a 2015 attack in Trollhattan that resulted in three deaths and was classified as a racist hate crime, and a 2022 attack in Malmo that killed two teachers.
