Student Threatens Roommate with Axe Over Snoring, Gets Suspended Sentence

A university student in Tainan received a 30-day jail sentence, suspended for two years, after threatening his roommate with an axe over loud snoring. The incident occurred when the student, identified by the surname Zhang, became enraged by his roommate's snoring and threw a small axe at the metal ladder of his roommate's upper bunk.

Zhang also verbally threatened his roommate, surnamed Cai, saying, "Can you stop snoring?" and "If you keep snoring, I'll dismantle your bed and split your head." Cai was startled awake and moved out of the dormitory the following day.

Cai reported the incident to the police, who confiscated the axe and forwarded the case for prosecution. During the investigation, Zhang admitted to throwing the axe and apologized to Cai. The court took into account that Zhang had no prior criminal record and that both parties had reached a settlement, which Cai had fulfilled. Cai expressed his willingness to forgive Zhang, citing his remorse, and requested a suspended sentence.

The judge considered Zhang's impulsive actions and his good attitude after the offense. Evaluating Zhang's intellectual capacity and living situation, the court concluded that he would not re-offend after this experience. Consequently, Zhang was sentenced to 30 days of detention, convertible to a fine of 1,000 New Taiwan dollars per day, and granted a two-year suspended sentence. The case is subject to appeal.
