Students back at former MITT campus after rocky transition amid school closure

Students and staff returned Tuesday to the former Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology campus after a difficult transition period with RRC Polytech. The campus in Winnipeg’s Henlow Bay now serves both RRC Polytech and students who were previously enrolled at MITT.

MITT closed after announcing a 55% decline in international students. The closure followed federal international student caps announced in 2024, which reduced revenue for many post-secondary institutions because international students pay about three times the tuition charged to domestic students.

The transition created confusion over classes, credentials and the future of the school. Patrick Taggart, a former MITT Millwright program instructor who worked there for nine years, said there had been some problems, including a layoff procedure, but students and staff were getting answers to their questions.

There had been some bumps [a layoff procedure when someone is moved from a position], but for the most part things have been moving along. We’re getting our questions answered.

RRC Polytech absorbed 19 MITT programs. Its international enrolment is projected to be about 27% lower than at the same point last year, according to acting communications manager Lauren Parsons. President and CEO Fred Meier said domestic enrolment had risen 3% and that 400 new students had been admitted to the South Winnipeg Campus.

MITT and RRC Polytech said they had been working together to support the start of the academic year. Students who had previously enrolled at MITT will graduate with MITT credentials.
