Students make visibility hip with reflective stickers

Young people often discard high-visibility vests as they get older, but traffic safety remains crucial. Five business management students at PXL University College have developed a fashionable solution: VISIBL Studios. They design handmade reflective stickers that merge streetwear aesthetics with traffic safety.

"We're making visibility something you actually want to wear," the students explain. Their stickers can be applied to backpacks, bicycles, helmets, or clothing. Designs cater to different age groups, with slogans like 'Did You See Me?' and 'Stay Visible' popular among teens, while younger children prefer shapes like stars or symbols.

Before launching, the students tested the stickers' effectiveness in a dimly lit street. "We stuck the stickers on different parts of our bodies and observed our visibility as a car approached, both from the front and back," said Nisa Karali. The reflection proved clearly visible. Although the stickers don't yet meet official safety standards, the team aims to scale up and adhere to international high-visibility regulations.

VISIBL Studios produces all stickers locally in Diepenbeek, emphasizing sustainability and cost-effectiveness by avoiding transport and supporting local manufacturing. This approach has proven successful, with their initial collection selling out completely. The students are now developing new products, including hoodies with reflective details, to encourage more young people to participate in traffic safely and visibly.
