Students sheltered inside Lycksele schools as police investigate weapons tip

Students at Tannbergsskolan in Lycksele were kept inside their classrooms after police received a report that someone with a possible weapon was near the school.

The tip reached police at 12:55 p.m., and the first patrol arrived 10 minutes later. Officers entered the school shortly afterward. Police spokesperson Elin Andersson said the operation was a precaution and that no one had been injured.

Police continued to inspect the premises about an hour after the operation began. Västerbottens-Kuriren reported seeing officers running through the school grounds with their weapons drawn, but police said there was no indication that a crime had been committed. The force warned that rumors were circulating and urged people not to pass on unconfirmed information.

Parents tried to collect their children, and some students were allowed to go home around 2:30 p.m. Tannbergsskolan, the largest upper-secondary school in Västerbotten’s inland region, has about 600 students. Students at nearby Södermalmsskolan were also sheltered, according to its principal.

At the ski academy, six teachers and about 15 students remained inside. Teacher Petter Ögren said they were calm, although the situation was difficult for some. Neither he nor the students had seen anyone with a weapon. The municipal crisis management team met at about 2:30 p.m.
