Students will travel free by train throughout the 2026-27 school year

Romanian students can continue to travel free by train throughout the 2026-27 school year, CFR Călători said. The benefit covers domestic travel on Regio, InterRegio and InterCity services.

Free tickets apply to second class, and students do not pay reservation fees on trains that require reservations. They can also request free monthly passes with unlimited travel, regardless of the train category, provided they travel in second class.

Students who choose first class, sleeping cars or couchettes must pay the full fare difference and reservation costs. Tickets are available at railway station ticket offices and CFR Călători travel agencies. Students can also obtain them online or from ticket machines after validating their student status and receiving a valid school ID.

A ticket may be issued directly on board when a student boards at a station without a ticket office. Monthly passes are available at ticket offices, travel agencies and online. Digital passes can be downloaded to a phone as a QR code with dynamic elements, while machines can issue them using a validated student ID.

Until September 30, students may use a student book, student card or school certificate validated for 2025-26. From October 1, CFR Călători will issue free tickets and passes only on the basis of documents proving student status for 2026-27. During inspections, students must show a valid ticket or pass, in original form or as a digital QR code, along with an identity document.
