Sudden Weather Change Hits Croatia: Orange Alert for Zagreb Region Amid Storm Warnings

Croatia is bracing for a significant shift in weather patterns, moving from sunny summer conditions to a period of potentially severe storms. The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service has issued warnings, with the Zagreb region facing an orange alert due to the risk of thunderstorms, heavy winds, and hail. This alert signifies dangerous weather conditions.

While the current day is expected to remain partly sunny with summer temperatures, the stability is short-lived. By evening, cloud development is predicted to increase in the interior, especially in the north, bringing localized showers and thunderstorms. Winds are also expected to shift and strengthen, with gusts potentially exceeding 55 kilometers per hour in the Zagreb region.

The situation is forecast to escalate on Tuesday, with changeable and dynamic weather across the country. Central Croatia may see early morning showers, followed by a more significant cloud cover and rain from the west by the end of the day. The northern interior faces the highest risk of severe thunderstorms. Simultaneously, yellow alerts for thunderstorms are in effect for the Karlovac and Gospić regions, while the Adriatic coast will experience moderate to strong southerly winds.

Thursday is expected to bring the peak of this unstable weather, expanding the orange alert to include the Osijek region in addition to Zagreb. Northern and eastern Croatia should prepare for localized storms with heavy rainfall, potentially exceeding 20 liters per square meter in a short period. Strong winds with storm-force gusts are also anticipated, with yellow alerts covering most of the rest of Croatia as the weather system moves south and towards the coast.
