Suicide bomber kills nine in Pakistan protest attack

A suicide bomber targeted a busy intersection near a police station in Pakistan's Swat district on Aug. 2, killing nine people and injuring 20. The attacker detonated an explosive vest after police stopped him from entering the station.

Swat's Deputy Inspector General of Police, Fida Hussain, confirmed the rising casualty toll, stating that seven people, including four police officers, initially died. The blast occurred during a civil society protest. Several of the wounded are in critical condition.

The attack took place in the northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region grappling with a growing insurgency by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP has previously claimed responsibility for attacks in the area. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for this specific bombing.

This incident follows a separate homemade bomb blast in the provincial capital, Peshawar, on Aug. 2, which wounded four police officers and was claimed by the TTP. Security forces have reported significant casualties in recent militant attacks and subsequent operations.
