Süleymancılar investigation: Doctor of Arif Ahmet Denizolgun arrested

Nurettin Demirkol, who was described as the doctor of former Transport Minister Arif Ahmet Denizolgun, has been arrested in an investigation led by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities had detained him on suspicion of false testimony before sending him to court, where he was jailed.

Demirkol’s earlier statement to prosecutors has also emerged. He said he knew Denizolgun because he had examined him several times, but rejected claims that he had been Denizolgun’s private doctor. He said he had only seen him a few times at hospital and knew of hypertension, but no other illness.

According to the statement, Demirkol went alone to a farm on the night of Denizolgun’s death. He said Denizolgun appeared partly reclined on a sofa and had already developed signs of rigor mortis. Demirkol said he saw no bruising or scratches and no blood on Denizolgun’s face or body.

Demirkol also said he might have interpreted dark fluid from the stomach as blood because he was not a forensic medicine specialist. He said he signed documents as they were presented to him and that parts of the records could have been entered incorrectly. He told prosecutors he did not make an assessment suggesting a suspicious death, and said he did not know about internal matters of the religious group or whether Alihan Kuriş had declared himself its leader.
