Summer heat poses a hidden threat to condom effectiveness, with experts warning that improper storage significantly increases the risk of breakage. Condoms are engineered to perform best when kept between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. Exposing them to temperatures above 30 degrees for extended periods can irreversibly weaken the latex, making them far more likely to fail during intercourse and compromise protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

The material's vulnerability to heat, humidity, and UV radiation is well-documented. Scientific studies confirm that heat and sunlight diminish latex's tensile strength and elasticity. Laboratory tests reveal that "aged" condoms require less pressure to rupture, becoming brittle and less stretchy. This degradation is accelerated by common storage habits.

Locations like parked cars, which can reach over 50 degrees Celsius on a sunny day, are particularly dangerous, effectively "cooking" the latex. Wallets and back pockets are also problematic due to constant friction, pressure, and body heat, which can damage both the wrapper and the condom itself. Even seemingly innocuous spots like beach bags left in the sun or windowsills can compromise condom integrity.

To ensure reliability, experts recommend storing condoms in a cool, dry, dark place, such as a nightstand drawer or a closet. While cold temperatures do not harm condoms, sudden temperature fluctuations should be avoided. For travel, carry condoms in hand luggage and use dedicated protective cases instead of wallets.
