Summer Tomorrow School concludes 7th year in Pingtung, empowering rural children with volunteer support

The "Summer Tomorrow School" program, a yearly initiative by Teach For Taiwan (TFT), has successfully concluded its seventh consecutive year in Pingtung County. This year, 63 young volunteers from across Taiwan dedicated their time to running summer camps in collaboration with the Pingtung Education Innovation Base and local elementary schools like Daguang, Zhutian, and Checheng.

Over the past six years, TFT's "Summer Tomorrow School" has significantly impacted Pingtung's rural education, accompanying 902 elementary students and mobilizing 312 young volunteers. The program aims to foster educational equity by having young volunteers mentor and support students in underserved areas. Lee Yu-chen, Director of Pingtung County's Labor and Youth Development Department, highlighted TFT's continuous efforts since 2021 in deepening local educational innovation and building a support network for schools and communities.

This year's eight-day camp centered on four main themes: reading, mathematics, social-emotional learning, and exploring dreams. Beyond traditional academic subjects, the volunteers designed engaging "Dream Lab" courses. These included a mock trial, advertising design, indigo dyeing workshops, and media literacy sessions, catering to the diverse interests and talents of the young participants.

In anticipation of the national space center's establishment in Pingtung, the camp featured a special water rocket course. This hands-on activity allowed children to learn the basic principles of rocket launches and related scientific concepts through fun, practical experiments. The program's success underscores a commitment to providing enriching educational experiences for rural youth.
