Supermarkets Fined Tk 19 Lakh for Misusing Parking Spaces in Chattogram

The Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) has taken action against businesses and building owners for violating regulations, imposing significant fines. Two major super shops, "Utshab" and "Shwapno," located on Agrabad Access Road, were fined a combined Tk 19 lakh for repurposing designated parking areas for commercial activities.

A mobile court, led by CDA's Special Metropolitan Magistrate Hamimun Tanjin, conducted the enforcement drive. Utshab received a fine of Tk 8 lakh, while Shwapno and the building owner where it is located were collectively fined Tk 11 lakh. Abul Hasnat, CDA's public relations officer, confirmed the penalties.

In addition to the super shops, the CDA also levied fines totaling Tk 22 lakh on the owners of 13 buildings for failing to adhere to their approved architectural designs. CDA authorized officer Tanzib Hossain reported that five buildings and one restaurant were sealed due to non-compliance. CDA Chairman Belayet Hossain emphasized that the increasing conversion of parking spaces for other uses exacerbates traffic congestion and causes public suffering in the city.

Hossain also noted that CDA had previously inspected hospitals, finding many lacked adequate parking facilities, and had instructed them to rectify the situation promptly. The CDA's actions underscore a broader effort to enforce urban planning regulations and address issues contributing to the city's infrastructure challenges.
