Supreme Court chief justice allows work on Trump's $400M White House ballroom to continue for now

The White House has received a temporary reprieve in the construction of President Donald Trump's $400 million ballroom project. Chief Justice John Roberts issued an order Friday allowing work to continue for now, as the Supreme Court weighs an emergency request from the Trump administration.

This temporary measure prevents a halt to aboveground construction that would have taken effect before a fuller decision from the high court. The case stems from a district court ruling that stopped the project due to a lack of congressional approval. Roberts, who oversees appeals from the capital, issued the order.

The Trump administration asserts the president possesses total authority to renovate White House and other federal buildings, citing national security concerns for the ballroom project. However, the National Trust for Historic Preservation argues Trump lacks unilateral authority for the work, which has involved demolishing the East Wing. Lawyers for the group accused the White House of accelerating construction to bypass legal challenges.

Court documents indicate that 65% of the planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom is complete, with approximately $200 million in private donations spent or committed. Crews are reportedly working around the clock on the project. The administration's argument for presidential authority is being tested as Trump increasingly seeks to reshape the capital.
