Susan Sarandon says Hollywood roles are being withdrawn over her support for Palestine

Susan Sarandon says support for Palestine continues to cost her acting work. Speaking to reporters after the Venice Film Festival screening of “The Echo Chamber,” the 79-year-old Oscar winner said some roles had been withdrawn after agencies told people not to hire her.

Sarandon said public understanding of Palestine’s historical importance, Zionism’s links with the United States and American policy had changed sharply. She pointed to growing awareness of how much money the United States gives Israel and said people had voted to “unite” the U.S. military with the Israeli military.

She thanked “The Echo Chamber” director Andrea Pallaoro for ignoring warnings about her. Sarandon said she still faced positions in the film industry that were firmly defended by Zionists who had not softened their attitude toward her.

At the same time, she said she had found her family and the people with whom she felt she belonged, adding that she was now doing well. United Talent Agency, which previously represented her, ended its relationship with the actor in 2023 after she made a statement supporting Palestine.

Sarandon won an Academy Award for “Dead Man Walking” and has also appeared in films including “Thelma & Louise.”
