Suspect arrested in Bishkek over $12,000 car fraud case

Authorities in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, have arrested a man identified as Zh.U., born in 1983, in connection with a vehicle fraud scheme. The arrest followed a report filed by a Bishkek resident who claimed a man, introducing himself as 'U.', gained his trust under the pretense of assisting in the sale of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

According to the victim's statement, the suspect exploited his trust, took possession of the vehicle, and subsequently ceased all communication. Investigations revealed that the suspect had handed over the stolen SUV to a pawnshop as collateral for a loan. This act resulted in a financial loss of $12,000 for the vehicle's owner.

The Investigative Service of the Leninsky District Department of Internal Affairs has opened a criminal case against the suspect under Article 209, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, pertaining to fraud. The suspect was detained on July 16, 2026, and placed in a temporary detention facility pending further investigation. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
