Suspect in Berlin Pride parade van attack identified as Islamist extremist; manhunt underway

A van plowed into pedestrians at a Berlin Pride parade on the evening of July 25, resulting in one fatality and 17 injuries. Berlin police confirmed on July 26 that a registered local "Islamist extremist" is the primary suspect in the attack. The perpetrator fled the scene on foot after the vehicle crashed into a tree.

Witnesses reported that a white van veered off the road and sped into a pedestrian area near the Brandenburg Gate in Tiergarten park. The vehicle came to a halt only after colliding with a large tree. Of the injured, eight sustained serious wounds, with three remaining in critical condition, according to local fire and rescue services.

Berlin police indicated that investigators have identified the suspect through evidence found in the abandoned vehicle and other leads. The individual is known to authorities as a registered member of the local "Islamist scene." German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt were briefed on the incident. Scholz issued a statement condemning the "serious, brutal act" and pledged that the perpetrator would be apprehended and severely punished.

This incident marks the latest in a series of vehicle-ramming attacks in Germany in recent years. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the attack on the rally, which advocates for inclusion and peace, as "most cruel." Police have cordoned off the Tiergarten park area and are investigating the possibility of accomplices.
