Suspect in student's femicide surrenders after public outcry

Hugo "N," accused in the femicide of Cielo Beanjy, an orthodontics student at UAM Xochimilco, has surrendered to authorities in Mexico City. His surrender follows a previous arrest and subsequent release, which ignited widespread public anger and criticism of the justice system.

Last Friday, law enforcement officers detained Hugo "N" hours after Beanjy's murder in an apartment in the Gabriel Ramos Millán neighborhood. However, on Sunday, a specialized prosecutor's office decided to release him, citing insufficient evidence of flagrante delicto to justify continued detention. This decision drew sharp criticism on social media from users and activist groups who questioned the actions of the capital's prosecutor's office.

Family members and friends of the 26-year-old victim vehemently demanded justice. Following his release, investigators launched a renewed search for Hugo "N" after a judge issued an arrest warrant for femicide. Investigations suggest that Beanjy was attacked by her ex-partner inside the residence where the incident occurred. The accused reportedly called the victim's mother afterward, claiming they had argued and that Beanjy had become unconscious.

On Tuesday evening, Hugo "N" presented himself at the prosecutor's office and was subsequently handed over to judicial authorities. He has been transferred to the Reclusorio Preventivo Varonil Oriente, a men's correctional facility, where his legal status will be determined. Under the principle of presumption of innocence, Hugo "N" is considered innocent until a conviction is secured by the competent judicial authority.
