Suspected killer of Colombian engineering student arrested

Authorities in Antioquia, Colombia, have apprehended Diego Esteban R. O., who is suspected of murdering Gabriel Arenas Herazo, an engineering student at the University of Antioquia. Arenas Herazo disappeared on April 30 and his body was discovered five days later, concealed with a green sheet in El Silencio stream in Caucasia. The arrest was announced by the Governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, on August 2.

Antioqueños, Diego Esteban R. O., the alleged perpetrator of the murder of Gabriel Enrique Arenas Erazo, a student of engineering at the University of Antioquia, who occurred in April of this year in Caucasia, has been captured by the National Police.

The Antioquia Governorate had offered a reward of up to 50 million pesos for information leading to the capture of those responsible for Arenas Herazo's death. According to police and the governor's office, the arrested suspect, Diego Esteban R. O., is also allegedly implicated in the murder of an elderly woman within a residence in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood of Caucasia.

Investigators from the Fiscalía General de la Nación began their inquiry immediately after the discovery of the student's body on May 5. They collected testimonies and evidence to facilitate the arrest. The CTI confirmed in May that the body found belonged to Arenas Herazo, who was in his seventh semester of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Antioquia.

According to information from the authorities, this subject allegedly also participated in the murder of an elderly woman inside a residence in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood of Caucasia.

Three different versions of the student's disappearance were circulating. His family reported receiving a call from individuals claiming to have detained Gabriel's motorcycle and demanding a ransom for its return. Governor Rendón expressed confidence in the justice system to act decisively and extended solidarity to Gabriel's family and friends. The governor also urged for the responsible parties to face consequences.
