Suspected serial cable thief arrested after 30-minute Kuala Lumpur car chase

A suspected cable thief with a record of 37 offences was arrested after a 30-minute police chase through Kuala Lumpur during which officers fired several shots at his vehicle.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said traffic officers spotted the suspicious vehicle at about 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 while patrolling the Kesas Highway-Bukit Aman route. The driver sped away after police ordered him to stop, leading officers from the Awan Besar toll plaza towards Klang before the vehicle turned towards Jalan Hang Tuah 4 in Sri Petaling.

A shot was fired at the suspect’s vehicle during the chase, which lasted about 30 minutes before the vehicle stopped near a petrol station in Sungai Besi.

Fadil said police fired one shot during the chase. The vehicle eventually stopped near a petrol station in Sungai Besi, but the suspect allegedly refused to cooperate and tried to ram the officers. Police then fired several more shots, after which the vehicle sped away again and crashed into another car on Jalan Hang Tuah 4.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene, while the driver escaped. Police found tools believed to have been used for cable theft, along with stolen cables, inside the vehicle. Authorities planned to seek a remand order for the arrested man on Sept. 1 and were tracking the second suspect.
