Suspension Reduced for Korean High School Baseball Team Over Disparaging Slogans

The Korea Sports Arbitration Committee has reduced the suspension for the Baejae High School baseball team from six months to one month following a review. The team had faced the initial severe penalty for allegedly using cheer slogans that disparaged the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement during a game.

The committee's decision to lessen the punishment was influenced by the students' sincere apology and their visit to Gwangju to seek forgiveness. Crucially, the opposing school, Gwangju Jeil High School, which was directly affected by the controversial slogans, formally requested leniency for Baejae High School.

The controversy had escalated significantly, drawing attention from political circles and leading to the initial six-month ban imposed by the Korea Baseball Softball Association's Sports Arbitration Committee.

Following the initial ruling, Baejae High School took steps to address the situation, including visiting Gwangju Jeil High School to read separate apology statements from players, coaches, and staff. They also paid respects at the National 5.18 Cemetery. Gwangju Jeil High School accepted the apology and subsequently appealed for a reduced penalty for their opponents.
