Suwon City Searches for 1-Meter Lizard After Sightings; Owner Claim Emerges

Authorities in Suwon, South Korea, launched a search for a large lizard, reportedly about 1 meter long, after multiple sightings were reported in the Gwanggyo New City area. The search, however, did not result in the animal's capture.

The initial reports and a video circulated on local online communities described a lizard, possibly a Nile monitor, spotted on an apartment complex's walking path. The footage showed the creature flicking its tongue and disappearing into bushes.

In response, the Suwon City government mobilized 12 personnel, including city officials and firefighters, to scour the reported sighting locations. Despite their efforts, the lizard remained elusive.

Illegally distributing or abandoning them can lead to legal penalties.

City officials stated they are trying to verify the claim and ascertain the details, as they have not yet been able to contact the purported owner directly. They plan to confirm the species if the lizard is found. The city has also advised residents to exercise caution in the area. No official reports of the lizard's appearance have been filed with the city or fire department to date.
