Sweden becomes a hotter travel destination

Scandinavia is experiencing a surge in interest as a travel destination, driven by rising temperatures and wildfires in Southern Europe. Travelers are increasingly seeking cooler climates, a trend dubbed 'Coolcations,' as they plan their summer holidays.

Data from booking comparison site Trivago shows a 57% increase in searches for accommodations in Sweden during July and August from UK travelers compared to last year. Norway saw a 55% rise, and Denmark experienced a 29% increase. Booking platforms like Booking.com also report a substantial uptick, with searches for holidays in Norwegian and Swedish locations rising by a third in the three weeks leading up to July 4th, compared to the previous year.

Surveys from the European Travel Commission indicate that a growing number of travelers are factoring climate change into their holiday decisions, with 28% expressing a preference for cooler weather. Visit Sweden's CEO, Susanne Andersson, told Dagens Industri that 'almost all travel trends right now speak for the Nordics.' She noted that many travelers desire destinations with fewer crowds and are looking for activities beyond simply relaxing in the sun, preferring to be more active during their vacations.
